Breaking The Silence

The ‘Breaking the Silence’ project aims to raise awareness about menstrual health and hygiene among marginalized adolescent girls in the Chittagong Hill Tracts. This includes conducting seminars, establishing menstrual hygiene corners in schools for low-cost sanitary pad access, and surveying to assess current menstrual health practices and perceptions.

Project Activities

Interactive educational seminars are conducted in schools to raise awareness about menstrual health and hygiene. These sessions are designed to address myths, taboos, and misconceptions associated with menstruation, ensuring students gain accurate information in a supportive environment.

Content:

  • Basics of menstrual health, hygiene practices, and managing discomfort during periods.
  • Importance of proper sanitation, such as frequent changing of pads and safe disposal methods.
  • Debunking common myths and cultural stigmas surrounding menstruation.

Interactive Component:

After the presentation, a Q&A session allows students to anonymously ask questions and share their concerns, creating an open dialogue and building confidence.

Impact:

These sessions aim to normalize discussions around menstruation, empower students with knowledge, and improve overall menstrual health practices.

A quiz competition is organized to raise awareness about menstrual hygiene practices and the importance of maintaining menstrual health. This activity emphasizes learning through engagement and creates excitement among students.

Quiz Focus Area

  • Basics of menstrual hygiene practices and their importance.
  • Preventing common menstrual health issues.
  • Dispelling myths and misconceptions about menstruation.

Prizes

Winners of the quiz receive prizes such as school supplies or hygiene kits to encourage active participation and learning.

Impact

This program promotes menstrual hygiene awareness, reinforcing preventive health behaviors among students.

Specially designated areas called "Menstrual Health Protection Corners" are set up in schools to provide access to menstrual hygiene products. These corners are intended to be a safe and private space where girls can purchase sanitary pads at a subsidized rate.

Implementation Steps:

  • Identify a secure and accessible location within each school for the health protection corner.
  • Stock sanitary pads and other menstrual hygiene products, ensuring affordability for all students.
  • Train designated school staff or volunteers to manage the corner and maintain inventory.

Features:

  • Affordable pricing to make pads accessible to all students.
  • Regular restocking based on demand and feedback.
  • Educational materials about menstrual hygiene available in the corner.

Impact:

These corners help reduce barriers to menstrual hygiene by ensuring privacy, affordability, and convenience. They also encourage students to adopt better hygiene practices by making sanitary products readily available.
